2013 Fiat 500 offers a lot of engine in small package

2013 Fiat 500 Abarth Carbrio

The FIAT 500 Hatchback may be only about 140 inches long and 60 inches tall, but it is definitely the little engine that could—and more. We at Suburban Fiat of Ann Arbor are pleased to tell you more about this favorite little FIAT.

Under the hood

The 1.4-liter engine has 101 horsepower with 6,500 rpm. For those new to car engines, one horsepower is the power needed to move 550 pounds one foot in one second — or 33,000 pounds one foot in one minute. The torque comes in at 98 lb.-ft with 4,000 rpm. The more torque your engine provides, the harder it can work. The FIAT 500 also has sequential, multipoint fuel injection and an inline four-cylinder configuration.

The FIAT 500 Hatchback engine has 16 valves rather than eight, providing a more refined and fuel-efficient engine. Its variable valve control is a feature of high-performance cars, and it improves valve timing at different engine speeds for smoother functioning.

The FIAT 500’s MultiAir engine closes up what, in other cars, is a partially open throttle. In other cars, this problem takes away about 10 percent of its propulsion energy. In the FIAT, this Valvetronic concept goes even further than it does in the BMW, using hydraulic fluid to help “decouple” the intake valves and camshaft.

This is combined with a masterfully designed electronically controlled solenid. Together, these things make up the Multi-Air system that improves fuel economy and reduces emissions—making it an excellent “green” car choice—and also boosts its horsepower. The five-speed manual transmission, along with front-wheel drive, provides plenty of control for the driver.

Great fuel economy

All this powertrain talk boils down to two important factors.

First, the FIAT 500 Hatchback has more than enough get-up-and-go under the hood.

Second, it has an impressive 31 mpg fuel economy in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. That gas mileage alone is enough to turn heads, whether you’re looking to cut your fuel costs or benefit the environment. But when paired with that MultiAir engine that creates fewer emissions, your FIAT 500 puts you on the way to a healthier planet.

Other features

The FIAT 500 Hatchback also has:

  • Driveline traction control
  • Electronic stability
  • Four-wheel antilock brakes
  • 15-inch steel wheels
  • Cruise control
  • Side seat-mounted airbags
  • Curtain overhead airbags in the first and second rows
  • Driver’s knee airbag
  • Air conditioning
